About the Book
In his new book, author Robert Dailey III reveals untold facts surrounding the true story of the 1981 murders of a respected Memphis police lieutenant and a beloved young catholic priest in Jackson, Tennessee, including the later prison slaying of the career felon who took their lives. Throughout the account, the thirty-four year career of Deputy Chief Robert Dailey Jr., the chief of detectives in the city where the crimes were solved, is also traced through stories of his exploits as told to the author; a rare glimpse behind the badge into the private life of a police officer.
The book’s title reflects the irony that the family name of the priest and the name of the city in which he took his final breath are both the same… Jackson.
Jackson transports the reader deep below the headlines and into the intimate and personal experiences of the real people touched by the crimes. Based upon meticulous research including personal interviews and examination of confidential police files and court records, the book describes the heartbreaking series of events beginning with the tragic slaying of the police officer and ending with the convicted killer’s own sardonic prison murder while waiting on death row. The narrative includes unpublished details of the crime scenes, investigations, evidence and the suspect’s capture and murder trial. Readers will enjoy the poignant side of law enforcement exposed by the author in the recounts of his father’s life as a police detective in chapters throughout the book titled "Recollections".
Jackson also shares a collection of warm remembrances of Father John Jay Jackson from his parishioners and close friends; an intimate look at the legacy of a man of peace whose life ended in terrible violence.
Whether you live in the region where the book’s events unfold, you enjoy true crime and police stories, or you are just curious to learn about the ironies of the three murders, Jackson will grab your attention and hold it until the last page is turned. You will certainly be entertained by the astonishing story of the crimes, the personal recollections of the career detective, and the inspiring life of the dearly-missed Catholic priest.
